As a diehard fans of Arctic Monkeys (been listening AM since high school), I’m extremely happy AM finally launch their fourth album. Since the third album, Humbug, AM (especially Alex Turner) seems to lost their touch and their music style is totally changed.
It’s not a rock and roll style anymore, but getting a lot of influence from Alex’s other band, The Black Shadow Puppet.
The good news is, in this fourth album, they’re somewhat back to old AM style!
There’s a lot of cool electric guitar tunes that will make you go crazy. Some songs, like “She’s Thunderstorms”, “Black Treacle”, “Brick by Brick” (great improvisation by switching the vocals), “The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala” and “Library Pictures” will instantly reminds you of old AM’s song, like “Old Yellow Bricks”, “Fluorescent Adolescent” or “Do Me A Favor”.
Whereas, some of their song in this album are kind of “dull” and sounds like karaoke songs. For example, “Reckless Serenade”, “Love Is A Laserquest”, “That’s Where You’re Wrong” and ESPECIALLY “Suck It and See”. Alex’s voice is flat and echo too much. The music is also flat. And doesn’t really match with the vocals.
What’s more dissapointing is, they decided to be “More American” and decided to tone down their accent! It’s true, Alex Turner didn’t sound like Harry Potthe anymore. The main reason I loved AM is because their cute Bri’ish accent. But they changed it. Such a dissapointment :(
Overall, although songs in their new album is far compared to the greatness of their old songs (like the legendary “Brianstorm” or “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”), also there’s no songs that make me want to repeat it for thousand times, it’s better than their 3rd album.
I’m hoping for more amazing songs from AM. And I wish they will get back to their old style, the fierce, fast and electrifying Actic Monkeys, because that’s what make me in love with AM. Don’t change your music style, AM new music style suck! WE WANT OLD AM BACK!
